Laurie Markiewicz is a New York-based photographer and educator. Her portfolio includes a variety of lifestyle, portrait, street, video, and collage work. Laurie shares the images that she captures through the camera lens - the visual ethnographies of those who occupy the world's most diverse city. Using the city as her backdrop, Laurie’s ability to capture detail within any composition provides new perspective on familiar and iconic locations around New York City and has solidified her voice over the last 10 years. Throughout this time, Markiewicz has incorporated photomontage, photo collage, and video to round out her oeuvre. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and spaces in New York City, Philadelphia, Berlin, the Netherlands, and Japan. (see full list with details below)
Laurie’s work as an early childhood educator and documentarian provides a glimpse into the intimate world of young children in New York City. With a focus on the developmental process through the child's exploration and process through art and play, she utilizes the Reggio Emilia and Waldorf educational philosophies.
With extensive experience working with at-risk children in the juvenile justice and public school systems in Connecticut, New York, and Pennsylvania, Markiewicz provided support and guidance in safe spaces. This allowed children to explore their identities and creativity through workshops and field trips focused on community building and social and cultural awareness.
Laurie is committed to promoting visibility for Autism and Lupus awareness. In addition, Markiewicz has always supported female artists. Her efforts in producing events and promoting the visibility of women in art and hip hop is well known.
Laurie resides in New York City.
